Who can nominate for the SWP?
We welcome nominations from anyone with sufficient knowledge about the nominee, with exceptions of persons that have a kinship or a monetary relationship with, or are immediate superiors of the nominee. Self-nominations are not allowed.
Who can be nominated for the SWP?
Any activity or actor that contributes broadly to the availability, conservation and protection of the world’s water resources, and to improved water conditions which contribute to the health of the planet’s inhabitants and ecosystems, is eligible to be nominated. The activities can be within the fields of outreach and awareness raising; policy and practices; and research. The work of nominees should have great potential or proven impact. Over the years, the Stockholm Water Prize Laureates have represented regions from all over the world and a broad range of water-related activities, professions and scientific disciplines.
Which category is most appropriate for my candidate?
The field of activities taken into account is broad. To ensure that we get nominations from all sectors, we use three broad categories. The categories are also used by the Nominating Committee in order to make fair reviews and comparisons between candidates. The categories are the following:
a) Outreach and Awareness Raising
This category includes dissemination and outreach of knowledge through:
- education and training of students or water professionals or communities
- dissemination of information to and awareness raising of larger groups of citizens, decision-makers and non-specialists
b) Policy and Practices
This broad category covers those aspects that pertain to the sound governance and management of water including implementation as well as to the health and well-being of people, society and communities. The category includes:
- human rights, conflict resolution, influence on policies, international cooperation with application in the water sector
- sustainable and safe management of water resources
- on-the-ground provision of water supply and sanitation facilities by governments, NGOs, aid organisations and others
- fund raising to implement water facilities or better water practices
- development and application of appropriate technology on a local basis
c) Research
This category includes both basic and applied research and regards the development of and leadership in new knowledge of:
- natural or physical or technological processes
- the functioning of complex systems
- development of new ecological or economical or legislative or institutional or administrative principles applicable to sustainable water management
When can I nominate?
The nomination period is announced at www.siwi.org/stockholmwaterprize/nominate. It is usually from January till September. Deadline for nominations to the 2012 Stockholm Water Prize is 15 September 2011.
Can I nominate myself or my organization?
No, self-nominations are not allowed. Please note that self-nominations or nominations made by persons closely related to the Nominee are not accepted either.
What does the nomination involve?
Nominations should be submitted in English preferably using the online form. You may also send us your nomination by e-mail to swp.secretary@siwi.org or in any other way that is convenient to you.
The only information we need from you is your name and affiliation; the nominee’s name and affiliation, and a short description of the candidate’s achievements.
What happens after the submission?
The received nominations are reviewed by the Nominating Committee, who develops a shortlist of very good candidates. The nominators of the shortlisted candidates are informed and encouraged to submit a more detailed nomination. Instructions for submission of the more detailed nomination will be given to the nominators at this point.
Can I nominate the same nominee again?
Yes, re-nomination is possible. During the nomination period you may use the online nomination form again (the latest submission will be evaluated), or inform the SWP Secretary on swp.secretary@siwi.org .
I am unsure if my candidate fits the requirements for a SWP nominee. What other prizes can I nominate an individual or an organization for?
The Stockholm Industry Water Award recognizes the business sector's contribution to sustainable water management. The national and international competitions for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize are open to young people between the age of 15 and 20
Can I nominate in another language than English?
No, all nominations should be submitted in English.
Can I change or update my information?

Is my nomination confidential?
All submitted material, including all names, is kept strictly within the Nominating Committee.
Do I get a receipt of my submission?
When you have submitted a nomination via the online nomination form, you will see a note telling you that your submission has been received. Submissions in other ways than on-line will be acknowledged by e-mail.
