Frequently Asked Questions

Who can nominate for the SWP?
We welcome nominations from anyone with sufficient knowledge about the nominee, with exceptions of persons that have a kinship or a monetary relationship with, or are immediate superiors of the nominee. Self-nominations are not allowed. You need to state your professional and/or business connection to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Who can be nominated for the SWP?
Any activity or actor that contributes broadly to the availability, conservation and protection of the world’s water resources, and to improved water conditions which contribute to the health of the planet’s inhabitants and ecosystems, is eligible to be nominated. The activities can be within the fields of education and awareness raising, human and international relations, research, water management or water-related local activities. The work of nominees should have great potential or proven impact. Over the years, the Stockholm Water Prize Laureates have represented regions from all over the world and a broad range of water-related activities, professions and scientific disciplines. The standards are the highest in the field. To be awarded the Stockholm Water Prize, the winner’s accomplishment must stand in a class of its own.

When can I nominate?
The nomination period is announced at /stockholmwaterprize It is usually from June till September.

Can I nominate myself or my organization?
No, self-nominations are not allowed. Please note that self-nominations or nominations made by persons closely related to the Nominee are not accepted either.

What does the nomination involve?
Nominations should be submitted in English using the electronic form. Nominations must clearly describe and explain the nominee's main achievements and emphasize their importance. To augment understanding of the achievements of the nominee, nominations are required to include at least two independent, informative letters of reference explaining, supporting and emphasizing the nominee’s main achievements. Nomination guidelines are included in the form.

Can I nominate the same nominee again?
Yes, re-nomination is possible. During the nomination period you may use the online nomination form again (the latest submission will be evaluated), or inform the SWP Secretary on swp.secretary@siwi.org .

I am unsure if my candidate fits the requirements for a SWP nominee. What other prizes can I nominate an individual or an organization for?
The Stockholm International Water Award recognizes the business sector's contribution to sustainable water management (/stockholmindustrywateraward) . The Swedish Baltic Sea Water Award recognizes direct and practical efforts to improve water quality in the Baltic Sea (/swedishbalticseawateraward). In addition, the national and international competitions for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize are open to young people between the age of 15 and 20, (/stockholmjuniorwaterprize).

I filled in the online nomination form but did not get any feedback …
When you have submitted a nomination via the online nomination form, you will see a note telling you that your submission has been received. Notes on acceptance will also be sent out by e-mail after the deadline for submission. No further information will be sent out until the winner is announced, normally on World Water day 22 March.

Who selects the winner?
A nine-member international Nominating Committee appointed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences reviews nominations from around the world and recommends a Prize Laureate to the Board of the Stockholm Water Foundation, which makes the final decision. Direct approaches to members of the Nominating Committee may disqualify a nominee from further consideration.
