Professor Jan Lundqvist is a globally recognised expert who specialises on the water, food, land-use, human resources and policy nexus. He currently works at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) as a Senior Scientific Advisor and project leader for international applied research projects, such as From Field to Fork: Curbing Losses and Wastage in the Food Chain. Prof. Lundqvist is also actively involved in research and training programmes on Transboundary Water Management and scenarios on Water and Humanity 2050 and serves at the Scientific Programme Committee for the World Water Week in Stockholm. Currently, he is involved in several international projects focusing on water, climate variability, food security and socio-economic development options.


Through decades of initiating and leading research, including 100 publications, Prof Lundqvist has extensive experience and networks within academia, the UN system, bi-lateral programmes, NGOs, and the private sector. He is a frequently invited as guest lecturer and speaker at universities and international forums, and is regularly interviewed by Swedish and global media. Prof. Lundqvist is active in several academic and international organisations, e.g. the Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, Sweden, the STAP list of experts (Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Prof. Lundqvist’s diverse experience includes research projects in Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, the Sudan, Egypt, Middle East, Southern Africa, Sri Lanka, India, Brazil, Norway and Sweden. A characteristic feature of his research is a multi-disciplinary approach and analysis.


Prof. Lundqvist worked as a senior lecturer and associated professor at the Universities of Bergen and Oslo. In 1980, he continued his academic career as a professor at the Department of Water and Environmental Studies at Linköping University in Sweden. There, he also was the Head of Department from 1983-1986 and from 1993-1996. Prof. Lundqvist served as a board member of the Water Research Fund for Southern Africa and as a vice-president of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA).
