Mr. Jakob Granit

Mr. Jakob Granit currently works at the Stockholm International Water Institute as a Project Director responsible for project and advisory services. Mr. Granit, a water resources management specialist, has over 15 years experience working with transboundary water resources development and is experienced in the full project cycle: identification, preparation, financing and implementation. This includes analytical work and strategic planning coupled with major fundraising activities and the fiduciary oversight and responsibility for significant credits and grants. Mr. Granit and strong interest in new knowledge for sustainable development and has participated as chair, speaker, rapporteur, and organizer of numerous workshops and seminars over his professional career.

Previous Experience

Mr. Granit has extensive work experience working in all countries in Eastern & Southern Africa, as well as in Sudan, Egypt, the US and Europe.

Before joining SIWI, Mr. Granit worked for the World Bank as a Sr. Water Resources Management Specialist. This included serving as a Cluster Team Leader for the multi-sector Nile team and providing advisory services and institutional building advice to clients in East, Central and Southern Africa in the area of multi-purpose water resources development for economic growth. This position encompassed in-country and inter-country regional water management, hydropower development, energy, environment, agriculture, private sector development, policy and legal reform, and institutional development.

During his 8 years at the World Bank, Mr. Granit was engaged in  high level dialogue with Senior Government officials, sector experts, civil society, private sector and donor partners with the objective of creating a conducive environment for development programs and projects in an international and national context.

At the Swedish International Development Agency Sida in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mr. Granit was program manager and responsible for the launch of Sida’s transboundary water resources management initiative in Southern Africa. There he worked with the strategic direction of the initiative  for major transboundary water management and investment planning for sustainable development.

Key Current and Previous Projects

  • Manage SIWI's Regional Water Intelligence Team that provides client specific advise and intelligence on the political economy of water in regions and basins supporting investments for responsible development
  • Provides advisory services, backstopping, evaluations and analysis to the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida) in their efforts to implement the Swedish Government’s regional support strategy for regional issues in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • The Baltic Turntable: How the Baltic can become a Model for good marine environment and strong regional development - A new vision. Ongoing regional initiative and project submitted to the European Union.
  • Nile Basin Public Goods: Policy paper prepared jointly with the World Bank that focused on public goods in the context of the Nile Basin regional development.
