City of Stockholm boosts SIWI’s work with new donation
As World Water Week, the world’s leading water meeting, got underway on Monday, The City of Stockholm announced it will donate SEK 50 million (USD 7,1 million) to Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).
SIWI generates knowledge and informs decision-makers towards water wise policy and sustainable development. It organises World Water Week in Stockholm and hosts the Stockholm Water Prize, the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and the Stockholm Industry Water Award. The institute’s aim is to help strengthen Sweden’s and Stockholm’s role as an international centre for research and development of water management.
“This gift enables SIWI to strengthen its long-term commitment to research and knowledge production”, said Mr. Torgny Holmgren, SIWI’ Executive Director. Mr. Björn Druse, Managing Director for Finance and Administration, said that the donation will increase the SIWI’s financial independence, “a corner-stone of our organisation’s integrity”.
The donation letter was signed Monday during World Water Week, by SIWI’s chairman Mr. Peter Forssman and Mr. Sten Nordin, Mayor of Stockholm. SIWI is the operative arm of Stockholm Water Foundation, which was formed in 1990 with the City of Stockholm as one of the founders. The City of Stockholm is also a co-founder of the Stockholm Water Prize, and its renowned City Hall hosts the annual Stockholm Water Prize royal ceremony.
