Webcast of seminar “Can Water Make Peace?” available

Dr. Therese Sjömander Magnusson, Director of SIWI's Transboundary Water Management theme, recently spoke at the seminar Can Water Make Peace?, arranged by the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI).

Together with representatives of the Strategic Foresight Group (SFG) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the issue of water cooperation was explored. Collaboration between countries sharing transboundary water resources is directly linked to the security of those, and peace in the continent where they are situated. Therese’s message during the seminar was that water indeed can contribute to make peace, as part of the puzzle. But power balances in basins needs to be addressed. Transboundary Water Management is about power relations, which influence the way actors can cooperate. The quality of cooperation is also critical – treaties are not always enough to secure good cooperation.
