Over the last years, the water community has increasingly been discussing something referred to as “The Nexus”. As mysterious as it may sound, this is a concept which attempts to highlight the close links between the most basic components of society: food, energy and water. Food production requires water, water extraction and distribution requires energy and energy production requires water.
Energy, agriculture and water are interlinked, interrelated areas in reality, but are seldom managed on national and international levels as such. There is a shortage of holistic approaches to the management of these areas in general, but not at the World Water Week. During the World Water Week 2012 there were numerous different sessions that looked into the effective management of the so-called “water-food-energy nexus”.
