The Stockholm Water Prize

The Stockholm Water Prize is the world´s most prestigious prize for outstanding achievements in water-related activities. It honours individuals, institutions or organisations whose work contributes broadly to the conservation and protection of water resources and to improved health of the planet´s inhabitants and ecosystems. Indeed, any water related activity is eligible because the award’s purpose is to recognise the most extraordinary body of accomplishments with great potential or proven impact.

H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is the Patron of the prize, which includes a 150,000 USD award and a crystal sculpture specially designed and created by Orrefors.

Founded by the Stockholm Water Foundation, the prize is additionally supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, International Water Association, Water Environment Federation and the City of Stockholm. The Stockholm International Water Institute administers the prize. A nine-member international Nominating Committee appointed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences reviews nominations and recommends a Prize Laureate to the Board of the Stockholm Water Foundation, which makes the final decision.

The Stockholm Water Prize Laureate is announced each March in connection with the UN World Water Day and presented to the Laureate at a Royal Prize Ceremony and Banquet in the Stockholm City Hall during the World Water Week in Stockholm. Over the years Stockholm Water Prize Laureates have represented regions from around the world and a broad range of water-related activities, professions and scientific disciplines.

Founders of the Stockholm Water Prize are Swedish and international companies in cooperation with the City of Stockholm.

The 2011 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate is Stephen R. Carpenter, Professor of Zoology and Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

Professor Carpenter's groundbreaking research has shown how lake ecosystems are affected by the surrounding landscape and by human activities. His findings have formed the basis for concrete solutions on how to manage lakes. Learn more
