This paper was conducted due to the High-level Seminar on the Assessment of Initiatives for Environmental Co-operation on Lake Victoria. The objective of the seminar was to apply experience from the Baltic Sea region and the cooperation between neighbouring countries to cope with environmental problems, to the situation of environmental degradation in the region of Lake Victoria.

Water is now acknowledged as a major limiting factor in the socio-economic development of a world with rapidly expanding population where poverty eradication and food supply both contribute to growing per capita needs. The 1998 Symposium aimed at highlighting strategies and policies that can be implemented to cope with these challenges from a water perspective.

The paper Water Harvesting is based on the workshop Meeting Hydroclimatic Variability in the Tropics and Subtropics: Strategies for Drought Effect and Mitigation at the 1998 Stockholm Water Symposium. The workshop contained six presentations describing the usefulness of rain water utilisation and describing practical experiences in different geographical regions.

The 1997 Stockholm Water Symposium focused at the strong interaction between land-use and coastal ecosystem health as mediated by the quality and movement of freshwater. It included topics central to more effective coastal management, such as the need for an ecosystem approach, the role of freshwater as a carrier of nutrients and pollutants, and the relationship between land use and water quality.
