This Water Front presents the workshop conclusions of World Water Week 2001. Some of the workshop topics were about the relation between industry and other water interests in a catchment context, the driving forces and incentives for change towards sustainable water development, and how you can increase the status of water issues in policy-making and in the public perception.

The 2001 World Water Week were a successful meeting with a diverse agenda included issues such as how to foster inter-sectoral dialogue, wastewater reuse for augmenting diminishing fresh water supplies, the pros and cons of dam projects, and the crucial role of fresh water for economic and social development, including agriculture, industrial use and energy production. This is a paper based on a workshop on environmental journalism during the World Water Week in 2001. The aim of the workshop was to highlight the importance of journalism in raising awareness about environmental and development issues to authorities, decision makers, NGOs and the public, and to promote the exchange of experiences and contacts between journalist from Lake Victoria and the Baltic Sea regions and strengthen the position of the free press.

Water harvesting has great potential to improve on-farm crop yields and food security for farmers in dry regions. This report synthesizes the current level of understanding in the field of water harvesting for crop production, identifies key research needs, and outlines water harvesting to upgraded rainfed agriculture in the semiarid regions as an area of strategic interest for Sweden. Not only would research and development efforts on increased biomass production concur with the Swedish Executive summary development agenda to reduce hunger and poverty, but also help mitigate human induced climate change.
