Since the 2nd World Water Forum in The Hague in 2000, water professionals have been working to develop a land/water integration in a catchment-based ““ecosystem approach””. However, the ““ecosystem approach”” means different things to different people. To some, it is based on the needs of the ecosystem. To others, it is based on the needs of the people who use the ecosystem. More of these contrasting interpretations and other interesting topics you can read about in this issue of Water Front.

This report, the abridged version of the full report Health, Dignity, and Development: What Will It Take? underscores the need to focus on the global sanitation crisis, improve domestic water supply and invest in integrated development and management of water resources. All are necessary for countries to reduce poverty and hunger, improve health, advance gender equality, and ensure environmental sustainability.

The actions proposed in this report are based on sound principles and fundamental truths and contributes to the understanding of the broader water resources management actions needed to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Sanitation and the means to practice hygienic behaviors yield direct benefits in terms of health, education and economic productivity. Lack of access to this most basic of needs is an assault against human dignity.

This report lays out the economic case for investing in sanitation: 1.47 billion people (20% of the world’s population) stand to benefit if the target is met and the economic benefits could be as high as USD 65 billion annually.

Solving the world’’s water and sanitation crisis would be expensive. But it would save far more than it cost, it would unlock huge potential, and it would improve countless lives. The Governments of Norway and Sweden commissioned the Stockholm International Water Institute to quantify the economic benefits of improved water management and services. The report’s findings demonstrate just how much good macroeconomic sense it makes to end the crisis. Read more in this issue of Water Front.

This is a brochure version of The UN Millennium Project Task Force on Water and Sanitation’s key recommendations on how to increase access to water and sanitation. The report underscores the need to focus on the global sanitation crisis which contributes to the death of 3,900 children each day, to increase access to domestic water supply, and to invest in integrated development and management of water resources. All are necessary for countries to reduce poverty and hunger, improve health, advance gender equality, and ensure environmental sustainability.
