Corruption in the Water Sector: Causes, Consequences and Potential Reform

2006 Synthesis Report: Beyond the River – Sharing Benefits and Responsibilities

Because water is unevenly available around the world, and benefit sharing is one possible way to even out this physical reality, the 2006 World Water Week focused considerably on seeking answers to questions about the approach, as well as potential policy options. Although benefit sharing has worked in some basins due to bi- and multi-lateral agreements, improved institutions, and strong basin organisations, the theory provides one reality while lifes lessons often provide quite another.

At the 2006 World Water Week in Stockholm, the Stockholm Water Foundation hosted the first-ever Stockholm Water Prize Laureates Seminar. This unique seminar gave former Laureates the opportunity to provide leading perspectives on todays most critical water challenges and opportunities. In their work, the Laureates have shown that human ingenuity, technical innovation, scientific curiosity and sincere engagement can indeed make a difference.

Integrated Water, Sanitation and Natural Resources Initiative in the Lake Victoria Region

Through the Swedish regional Lake Victoria Initiative (LVI) Sida has made a long-term commitment to the Lake Victoria region. LVI aims at supporting activities that will contribute to integrating issues of poverty alleviation, development and sustainable resources management and enhance participatory management and democratic governance of natural resources. The purpose of this paper is to explore how Sweden can increase its support into water, sanitation and natural resources using primarily existing channels at national and local levels.

The 2005 regional fact-finding report with the same name, was used as a guiding document and can be accessed here.

This is the 2006 Abstract Volume, presenting the ten workshops. Some of the workshop themes are: Tools for Benefit Sharing in Transboundary Settings, Changing Diets and their Implications for Water, Land and Livelihoods and Safe Water Storage and Regulation During Floods and Droughts.
