Water and Development in Developing Countries

This report offered the European Parliament background information and recommendations for formulating long term strategies and short term policies to aid developing countries to prepare and implement policies. The key message is that policy and strategy must be possible to translate into feasible programmes and projects that can be executed and lead to efficient, equitable and ecologically sound water resources management.

Water Security for Multi-National Water Systems

Equitable utilisation between upstream and downstream users in international river basins was discussed during the SIWI Seminar in August 2000. The proceedings contain presentations addressing foreseeable changes in water demands, water resources development, and land use conversions driven by aspects such as population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and income generation needs.

Changing parameters for hydropolitics in light of global climate change: the governance of transboundary waters to meet the water crisis

The research will investigate how increasing demands on global water resources and the increased uncertainty and variability caused by global climate change may impact the governance of transboundary waters. Selected case studies will be conducted in five major basins: the Mekong; Jordan; Ganges-Brahmaputra; Nile and Niger basins. Each case contributes to provide the analysis on how both the potential impacts of climate change, and the discourse surrounding it, will affect the governance of transboundary waters.

The project aims to accelerate the existing partnership between academia and the policy institutions. It will produce a number of academic papers and a published book, entitled “Transboundary water management and the climate change debate”. This book will analyse the current status of the climate change discussions both globally and at the transboundary basin level.

The governance of transboundary waters to meet the water crisis and global climate change: Building a network to strengthen ground research

The network of “the governance of transboundary waters to meet the water crisis and global climate change” is the response to the need to strengthen ground research on transboundary water management. The network organises a series of seminars and workshops and develops research proposals on the transboundary water governance.

Since 2010, SIWI and the partner organisations, Uppsala University and Gothenburg University, have organized seminars and workshops covering various topics such as the transboundary water cooperation, climate change, water security and international water law. As results, the network has generated new knowledge in the governance of transboundary waters by publishing academic papers, books and reports, and the researchers within the network have initiated new research projects on the transboundary water management. SIWI has contributed to generate new knowledge in transboundary water management and to provide the platform for the partners to connect.
