Food security in the Mekong is challenged by hydropower development on the Mekong mainstream. Decision makers, experts and local representatives now gather in Chiang Rai to address these challenges.

Lately, food security in the Mekong region has been challenged by the series of hydropower development proposals on the Mekong mainstream. In particular, the Mekong delta in Vietnam is perceived to be affected by the recent hydropower development both short-and long-term.

On March 11-13, one hundred decision makers, experts and representatives from local organisations will gather in Chiang Rai in Thailand, in order to address these challenges and discuss both how to improve food production and how to manage risks and vulnerabilities relating to food security.

Several government representatives from the water, food and energy related ministries in the Lower Mekong Countries, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam will be attending the meeting. They will be joined by representatives from more than 50 local and regional NGOs, as well as experts from the international community.

The meeting, which has been titled Food security in the Mekong – the water, food and energy nexus revisited, puts particular emphasis on scientific analysis and evidence. Speakers include:

Jamie Pittock, Australian National University

Eric Baran, Worldfish Centre

Mark Giordano, International Water Management Institute.
