China water sector cooperation programme

This programme will support water quality management and governance for the Chinese water resources sector. It will further serve to strengthen cooperation between Sweden and China in the area of water management and associated activities. The programme will develop a capacity building course on integrated water quality management (IWQM); facilitate twinning arrangements between basins in Europe and China, focusing on the management of pollution prevention and control; and provide technical support to policy makers to determine how economic instruments can be tailored and applied in China. SIWI will also provide input and capacity building on international event management to support the preparations for a future bi-annual forum on water quality that will be hosted MEP beginning in 2014.

Large-scale water storage in the water, energy and food nexus: Perspectives on benefits, risks and best practice

This paper provides an overview of the current status of large scale artificial water storage development and its functions in the water, energy and food security nexus. The paper presents a typology of water storage structures and provides an analysis of the risks, benefits and trade-offs posed by different storage options. It also highlights good practices and lessons learned from past experiences and explores emerging opportunities for water storage schemes to enhance water, energy and food security in the future.

2012 World Water Week puts thought to food

At the 2012 World Water Week, thought-leaders and policy makers will gather to innovate policy and practical solutions to ensure that every person can eat well and drink clean water in the struggling global economy.

World Water Week – Making a statement

Next June 4-6, global leaders will gather for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro (Rio+20 Summit), where they will seek to construct a new path for the global transition towards a green economy. At the closing of the World Water Week in Stockholm, participants provided a clear message to the heads of government, UN bodies, and civil society organisations as they make their preparations for next years Summit: The foundation of the green economy will rest on our ability to equitably and efficiently manage our water, energy and food resources.

American Public Health Champion Receives 2010 Stockholm Water Prize

Dr. Rita Colwell, distinguished Professor from the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Universitys Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States, has been named the 2010 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate. Dr. Colwells pioneering research on the prevention of water-borne infectious diseases has helped protect the health and lives of millions.

“Virtual Water” Innovator Awarded 2008 Stockholm Water Prize

Professor John Anthony Allan from Kings Collage London and the School of Oriental and African Studies has been named the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate. Professor Allan pioneered the development of key concepts in the understanding and communication of water issues and how they are linked to agriculture, climate change, economics and politics.
