Dr Peter Morgan of Zimbabwe today received the Stockholm Water Prize for his life-long work to protect the health and lives of millions of people through improved water and sanitation technologies.

H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presented the prize to Dr Morgan at a Royal Award Ceremony in City Hall, during the World Water Week held in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr Morgan has spent the last four decades inventing and advancing low-cost practical solutions to provide access to safe sanitation and clean water that are being used by millions of people worldwide.

“Many currently existing solutions to provide clean water and sanitation are unaffordable, impractical and out of reach for the world’s poorest people,” said the Stockholm Water Prize Committee in its citation. “As a result of Dr Morgan’s pioneering work, countless communities now enjoy safer water, a cleaner environment and quality of life.”

On receiving the award, Dr Morgan said: “It is indeed a great honour and privilege to have been presented this unique award. Those of us who work in this vital area are uniquely privileged because we are well placed and have an important role to play in conserving, and yet delivering the most precious resource on Earth – fresh water.

In this issue of the quarterly Stockholm Water Front, an exclusive editorial contribution by the Stockholm Water Prize Laureate Stephen Carpenter presents the dangers for overusing phosphorus. The Laureate says despite scientific uncertainty about reaching a stage of “peak phosphorus” production, humanity is definitely heading towards total exploitation of a nutrient that is extremely important for ecosystems. The issue also focuses on a range of regional and national issues, while keeping SIWIs global perspective. For example, it tackles water policy issues related to China’s Three Gorges Dam, the birth of South Sudan in the Nile basin, and droughts in the western Brazilian Amazon Basin. The diversity of those and other contributions aims to give the reader a critical view of some of the most current issues of our day.

On August 21, during the World Water Week in Stockholm, Professor John Anthony Allan will receive the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize from the hands of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. A powerful acknowledgement for a man who introduced a virtual water concept and whose work is helping solve conflicts over water, even in places where water is scarce and politics tense. Stockholm Water Front wanted to learn more about him, his thoughts and pathways to accomplishments during his distinguished career.
