Access to water and sanitation as human rights has gained growing attention over the last few years at a global level, increasingly engaging the water sector and the international community in discussions regarding its content and implications. Human rights standards help orient policy-making towards focusing on the poorest and most marginalised groups in society and towards ensuring fair and equal access to water. By establishing a legal framework, defining who is responsible for fulfilling the right, and promoting pro-poor and non-discriminatory service provision, human rights standards can effectively strengthen poverty reduction efforts.

This Policy Brief aims to identify basic challenges in implementing the human right to water and sanitation, and to guide decision-makers in some of the priorities that need to be agreed to secure safe, acceptable and accessible water for domestic purposes for everyone.

As much as half of all food grown is lost or wasted before and after it reaches the consumer. And this wasted food is wasted water too. To meet the challenge of feeding growing populations and the global hungry, massive reductions in the amount of food wasted after production are needed.

This policy brief calls on governments, businesses, consumers and other important actors in society to reduce by half the amount of food that is wasted by 2025 and outlines concrete steps to achieve this goal.

This Policy Brief covers the past agricultural management that has caused wide scale changes in land cover, streamflow, and groundwater systems and what actions that are needed in order to repair damage and lessen future negative impacts of climate change. In the future, agriculture will have to strike a balance between the water required for food and the water needed to keep ecosystems healthy.

The water necessary to produce the food required for an expanding human population is usually discussed only as an issue of blue water for irrigation (the water we use from rivers and aquifers). This neglects the fact that most food production is from rain fed farming which is critical in hunger and poverty stricken areas with rapid population growth.

This Policy Brief highlight the need to change how we view the world’s water resources. A shift in water thinking which considers soil moisture is essential in order to find realistic and sustainable options to feed the world of tomorrow.
