It presented as its core idea the concept of sustainable development, with the goal of meeting “the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The committee’s guiding image of the world followed the mainstream idea at the time of environmental problems as pollution and land degradation. The committee paid no particular attention to crucial environmental resources such as water, nor did it examine fundamental environmental constraints that would influence the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
