Strengthening institutions and building capacity

Enhancing institutional and individual capacity is key to promoting effective water management.

Organizations responsible for various aspects of water management – including resource management, infrastructure development, ecosystem protection, water and waste water treatment, water supply and surface run-off control – often need to improve the technical and managerial capacity of their staff.

SIWI develops and implements basin-, country- or region-specific programmes on request from partners. SIWI has conducted capacity building in various regions, including Botswana and Namibia in 2014.

SIWI also provides high-impact and relevant training courses on request from partners. Since 2005, we have provided training to over one thousand people from eighty-nine countries. Through the International Training Programmes in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Transboundary Water Management (TWM), SIWI has contributed towards improved management of numerous river and lake basins.

We welcome opportunities to work in partnership with institutions, companies and government to build the capacity of organizations working with water to deliver on their mandates.

SIWI also provides water integrity training through the Water Integrity Programme at the UNDP Water Governance Facility at SIWI. The training manual for this programme has been developed in cooperation with the Water Integrity Network, Cap-Net, and WaterNet, and exist in Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish. You can download the entire manual, or separate modules here.
